“I am a better person when I have less on my plate.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, “Eat, Pray, Love”

This blog began as an effort to promote the independent businesses of Chicago who, through their products and personal service, create and maintain this city’s character and culture. The idea is simple; even a small voice can make a big difference.

The lovely Jocelyn of Grandbaby Cakes is herself a small voice. Her blog, which brings old-school baking traditions to a new generation of foodies, has been publishing amazing recipes for only the past two years. Still, in that short time her talents have caught the eye of big names such as Ebony Magazine, Fox News, The Chicago Sun-Times, and many, many more.

Not one to hog the mic, Jocelyn decided to provide a platform for another small voice – those of Chicago’s often misrepresented youth. Last Friday, Grandbaby Cakes held a fundraising event to support Project Orange Tree, a campaign created with the purpose of educating young adults on the historical origins and present day effects of violence. My favorite part? Project Orange Tree is completely operated by Chicago teens!

“A Charitable Confection” featured the city’s best bakers, live entertainment, fine liquor, music and hors d’oeuvres. The scene was a decadent caloric paradise. In a word, it was EVERYTHANG!

Thanks to La Toya Keys of Elle Kay Events and Jocelyn of Grandbaby Cakes. I had a blast!
