Curls for a Cause

Last Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a very special event in honor of Chicago based vlogger Meechy Monroe. You may know Meechy as one half of the vlogger duo “The Monroe Sisters”. She and her sister, Ms. Vaughn of MsVaughnTV, have been major players in the natural hair community since 2010. They’ve created countless YouTube hair tutorials, flown all over the world as brand ambassadors, and helped women of different backgrounds embrace their own unique beauty and style.

In May of this year, Meechy Monroe was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of brain cancer. Since her diagnoses, Meechy has endured multiple strokes, two brain surgeries, and challenging sessions of chemotherapy. Despite this, her spirit has not broken. Prior to surgery, she chose to have all of her beautiful hair shaved off and donated to Locks of Love.

Touched by the story of her journey to recovery, the natural hair community wanted to give back to this beautiful woman during her time of difficulty.

With the help of some fabulous friends, Constance Cash, Editor-in-Chief of I Am Team Natural, organized Curls for a Cause, an event with the purpose of raising money to assist with Meechy Monroe’s medical care. The event was held at The Backroom in Chicago’s near north side.

Haircare brand Cantu played the role of title sponsor, spoiling us all with hair products and style demonstrations. Chicago’s own Brown Audio rocked the stage. A key panel discussion on blogging, branding, and business featured MsVaughnTV, Afrobella, celebrity makeup artist Alexandra Butler, Shalleen-Kaye of Natural Hair Does Care, and vlogger Donna of Donedo.

The event ended with a speech from Meechy herself that was so moving it had everyone in tears. This girl is a great example of remembering your power even when feeling powerless. She continues to influence others with her smile, non-defeatist attitude, and self-sacrificing spirit. What an amazing moment!

In case you missed it, here are some shots of the beauties in attendance. The room was full of inclusive love and glorious curls!
