We’re a long way from Baja, California, but Chicago’s chefs are mastering the gospel of fish tacos with evangelical zeal. A sort of silent competition has been waged for years, and the grand prize goes to hungry patrons. Here are my favorite seafood taco joints in the city.

Old Town

Chicago has more taco joints than we’ve got potholes. For a new taco-themed restaurant to make a lasting impression it has to be outstanding. Newbie Buzz Bait Taqueria is working its way up the charts with thoughtful details like fresh ingredients, handmade tortillas, and craft cocktails created with juice that’s squeezed daily. Expect them to stick around for some time.

Big Star is the humble sibling among a famous family of nationally recognized restaurants. It was here that I first fell in love with taco de pescado. Crispy fish, fresh cabbage, delicious sauce, and authentic corn tortilla. Seems simple, but few understand this essential formula so well.

Husband, wife, and baby make three. Owners Rick and Ashley Ortiz know what they’re doing at Antique Taco. The fish tacos here boast just the right amount of crispiness and spice, thanks to a bit of Sriracha. As is appropriate, fresh fish is still the star, with everything else being a complement. Stop in and ask about the “CEO”: Scout, their adorable baby girl.

GT Fish and Oyster is unique from other spots on this list in that its main focus isn’t tacos, but seafood. In this setting, you’re guaranteed the freshest fish possible. As if that wasn’t enough, they top it all off with fried pork skins—just because.
