Well, this is sad. Lollapalooza, the unofficial last big fling of the season, is almost here. We knew summer wouldn’t last forever, but who knew it’d end so soon. Headed to Grant Park August 1st-3rd? Awesome! You’ll need something to wear.
Last July, Chicagoings published the super useful article “5 Ways to Master Festival Fashion”. Check it out for inspiration on how to nail the trend with minimal effort.
When considering what to wear to a street festival, it’s easy to align with the masses of tattered maxi dresses, holey denim jumpers, worn floppy hats, and Birkenstocks. If you own none of the above or simply aren’t in the mood to dress like a hobo, go big on the one accessory that sums up the entire spirit of festival fashion – headwear.
Full disclosure, I strongly believe in finding any excuse to wear a tiara, floral head wreath, or anything else crown-ish. Aside from during brain surgery or sitting front row at the movies, there is literally no place where fabulous headwear is inappropriate. Maybe a job interview. Maybe.
Festival Fashion: Take it to the Head
Floral Head Wreath
The floral head wreath is as wrapped up in festival fashion as backpacks and booties (clarification: ankle boots). I made this one from a bunch of stuff I bought at Michael’s. Michael’s is where you wake up if you fall asleep watching HGTV. They’ll make you think anything can be created with only a sheet of drop cloth and a fabric marker. Enter the store with a plan or expect to leave with more twine than you’ll ever need.
The Glam Sash
I’d love to wear this with a kaftan cardigan and a pair of lived-in denim shorts. It’s actually the sash from my wedding dress. Is that weird? A little, right? Let’s move on.
Camo Turban
This turban is part of Chicago designer and art curator Maya-Camille Broussard’s line of designer headwear from The MCB Shop. It’s pretty dope. No knotting skills required, it comes pre-folded with a satin lining to protect the hair. Find it and others from her collection here.
Lace Headband
Sometimes all you want is a bold color and this lace headband from Claire’s (yes, Claire’s) is the perfect, cheap option.
The lesson for today: Put something, anything, on your head to be instantly transformed into the crowned queen or king of festival season. It’s really that simple.
How do you plan on mastering festival fashion during the last few music fests of the summer?
