Keeping in line with today’s brunch theme…
Last Sunday, Dark and Lovely, maker of the new Au Naturale line of curly/kinky girl hair products, invited me to an Everyday People brunch hosted in Chicago.
Everyday People is a New York City based monthly day party centered on copious amounts of food and throwback soul music. Rising Chef, Roblé, and the gorgeous Saada have only brought their brunch bash twice to Chicago. This time was even more epic than the last – their words!
It all went down at Untitled in the Near North Side. The menu included shrimp & grits, cornflake encrusted French toast, mimosas, and much more. Musical guest Tweet crooned for the crowd in both a special set for invited guests and a performance for the entire house. She’s still got it. I hope to be front and center for her new album and comeback tour.
One thing about the attendees definitely stood out: curly haired brown girls made up the majority – and it was glorious! I felt proud to be part of such an inspirational celebration of culture and life.
What it means for Chicago
The day party movement has been big in Chicago for a few years now, but the Everyday People brunch is special. Unlike the Kardashian wannabes who usually flood the day parties of lounges and rooftops, scanning the room in hopes of being noticed and admired, the Everyday People brunch boasts an inclusive, come-as-you-are vibe. If other day parties are a top 40 playlist, the Everyday People brunch is roots reggae. A sincere event with an underlying positive message. Hopefully, it will inspire more events like it in the city.
