Jessica writes, “I’m traveling to Chicago with my bf September 11-14 for RiotFest, a 3 day festival at Humboldt Park. We’re renting a car, which is expensive. This will be my first time in Chicago. Outside of the festival, what affordable things can we do to really maximize our short stay?”
You guys are going to have a great time at RiotFest, Jessica. If your plan is to save a coin while maximizing your stay, I suggest Chicago’s many free events and activities.
Cosas Gratis
In the heart of Chicago’s downtown lies our prized Millennium Park. As a tourist, you are obligated to visit this landmark and take a selfie under the large silver “bean”. If you’re looking for something romantic, an evening picnic on the lawn in front of the Jay Pritzker Stage, within Millennium Park, is the perfect option on a tepid night.
From 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. the city’s exceptional free zoo in Lincoln Park is open to the public. It’s the best place to waste some time. Lincoln Park Zoo is less than a 20 minute drive from Humboldt Park, where RiotFest is hosted.
Affordable Eats & Drank
A 10 minute drive from Riot Fest, The Whistler is a bar born from Chicago’s increasingly pretentious taste in prohibition-era cocktails. Expect a drink heavy in booze, bitters, and character from this cozy lounge. Each month for one night, the bartender selects a random cocktail recipe book from which to prepare guests’ drinks. September 11th, the theme is Potions of the Caribbean. It’s about to get “tiki” ya’ll! Live music starts at 9:30 p.m. No cover but there may be a line out the door.
If your budget is tight and you need something perfect for a crowd of two or three, I recommend Emporium Arcade Bar. This Logan Square favorite has declared itself the official post RiotFest hangout spot Friday, September 12th – Sunday, September 14th. They’ll have live music, drinks, and games. Average price for draft beer = $6.
Parson’s Chicken & Fish is a personal favorite. The food here is amazing. The prices are unbelievable. Come here for the best chicken and fish sandwiches you’ve ever had, as big as your face, served with homemade chips. Average price for a meal = $10.
Last but not least, I whole heartedly recommend Belly Shack. This tiny diner is full of surprises. Try a 100% beef hot dog topped with egg noodles and pickled papaya, served with fries (less than $9). Sounds weird? It’s delicious! Plus the drinks are great too, and most under $8!
