Today, Google officially announced the imminent retirement of Google Reader. The popular RSS feed reader is being deadened and put to rest July 1st of this year. Well, well, well. How annoying! For a while now, all of my favorite Google products from Feedburner to Reader have been ignored by the monster brand. No new updates, no new features, and, in the case of Feedburner, no customer support. Looking for an explanation? According to the official Google Reader Blog (which prior to today hadn’t been updated since 2011, but whatevs), “usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company [Google] is pouring all of [their] energy into fewer products [with the goal of creating a] better user experience.” What’s next? Should I even bother updating my Google calendar, or giving out my Gmail address?
As usual, however, it seems I’M the late one since bloggers and readers have long been making the move from Google Reader to more popular feed readers such as Taptu or Bloglovin’. Did you just roll your eyes? Have you too been using Bloglovin for months? Well, I had no idea Google Reader was so antiquated. Why didn’t you tell me? What’s more, a review on the pros and cons between the two has already been handled with intricate detail and helpful screenshots by Chicago blogger Katie of PeaceLoveandOats.com, a wonderful online journal about staying healthy in a city full of comfort food. Visit her site here and learn more about the pros and cons of Bloglovin and the soon to be retired Google Reader.
