Black Girls RunMy Running Story: Proving Something to Myself

I’ve been running for more than ten years. It started as a stint in high school volunteering with a breast cancer awareness 5k. After the charity runs came the fun runs and then the competitive races. Gradually, it grew into a routine. Before dawn during a business trip in Sweden, I ran miles through a town without seeing another soul. I’ve learned the backstreets of small European villages, and crossed the paths of deer and coyote in my own neighborhood because I’m up and I’m running. I love how it makes me feel and the opportunities for which it’s been a catalyst.

I’ve never achieved a runner’s high. Depending on the day, each mile may be a grueling fight for air and motivation – even after 10 years. Most mornings, I’d rather just sleep an extra hour. Getting up, dressed, and out the door is a way for me to prove something to myself. After I’ve done that, I’m ready to prove myself to the world.

Black Women and Exercise: A Hairy Problem

Regular exercise is a necessity for both our mental and physical health. For some women, though, sweating is not an option. Curly and kinky haired girls, like me, may invest a lot of time and money into our tresses. If our hair is straightened, just thinking about water can send our edges and roots reverting back to kinky curls in no time, washing away that investment.

Fly hair is no excuse for maintaining poor health. In an effort to combat the obesity epidemic among women in the African-American community, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks founded Black Girls RUN!. This running group now includes more than 70 groups across the nation with more than 96,000 members. A support system for runners of all levels, the goal is to help each member reach their fitness goals.
