“The people involved in this (Nail Art Culture) community have no formal art training, yet their passion to make beautiful, over-the-top ornamental objects is what truly struck me, hence the body of work. It has reminded me of why I am an artist and why I choose to create.” Carlos Dzine Rolon, 2011
Chicago artist Carlos Rolon, a.k.a. Dzine (pronounced De-sign), has had quite an effect on the nail art industry. His book, Nailed, published by Standard Press in 2011, traces the ancestry of ‘tipsy’ designs and spoon feeds the general public a form of expression many considered a cultural anomaly. Now, what was ‘ours’ is officially everyone’s as socialites, models, and even Tilda Swindton (I’m so jelly about that last one!) are rocking ‘hood’ nails. If you’re unfamiliar with Dzine, get schooled here.
