I just returned from London and had more fun, ate more food, and felt more relaxed in three days than I have after a week in the past.
If you’re looking for a vibrant and exciting city to explore on a 3-day weekend, London should be at the top of your list. With its rich history, diverse culture, and world-class attractions, London has something to offer everyone, from history buffs to foodies to art enthusiasts.
If you’re short on time, keep your experience within one side of the city. London is HUGE, and you don’t want to waste time in transit. I advise staying in the area near Soho, Marylebone, and Mayfair.
Once you’ve secured your home base, it’s time to map out your itinerary. Here are some of the top things to do during a 3-day weekend in London.
Day 1 in London:
Morning:
On your first day in London, it’s a good idea to start by exploring some of the city’s most iconic sights. Start with a visit to the iconic British Museum. Choose a free day and an entrance with no wait. (Watch me walk inside in less than three minutes.) This world-renowned museum is home to an incredible collection of artifacts from around the world, including the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and the Sutton Hoo burial ship. Best of all, admission to the British Museum is completely free. Stop in for an hour or less and have an idea of what you want to see before heading there.
Afternoon:
After exploring the British Museum, head to a nearby cafe before enjoying a leisurely store in a picturesque neighborhood. Then, enjoy afternoon tea at one of the many well-loved tea rooms. (Here are my two favorites.)
Evening:
End your first day in London with a visit to the West End, the city’s famous theatre district. Catch a show at one of the many theatres, such as the Sondheim Theater, home to the best performance of Les Miserables I’ve ever seen. After the show, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the area, such as Dishoom, which serves up delicious Indian cuisine. (Insider’s tip: There’s also a cool, hidden speakeasy nearby. Join me for a cocktail there in this video.)
Day 2 in London:
Morning:
You deserve a break. May I recommend a dip and rub down at Aire Ancient Baths in Convent Garden? We have an Aire Ancient Baths location in Chicago, and there’s nothing like it. Inside a vast space with lofty ceilings are a series of pools that promise to float away all your stress and anxiety. In the mood to splurge? Enjoy a wine bath in their exclusive heart-shaped tub.
Afternoon:
Now that your body feels like a wet noodle, stay in Covent Garden for some shopping. This bustling pedestrian square is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and street performers, making it the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Take advantage of the opportunity to try some delicious street food, such as the famous fish and chips from The Rock & Sole Plaice.
Evening:
End your second day in London with a visit to the vibrant neighborhood of Shoreditch. This trendy area is known for its street art, independent shops, and eclectic nightlife. Start the evening with dinner at one of the many hip restaurants in the area, such as Pizza East or Smokestak.
If you’re an art lover like me, you may choose instead to visit Sketch Restaurant in Mayfair before heading elsewhere for after-hours fun.
Day 3 in London:
Morning:
Start your final day in London with a visit to the South Bank, a scenic area along the River Thames that’s home to some of the city’s top attractions. Start by visiting the Tate Modern, one of the world’s leading contemporary art museums, which is housed in a converted power station. From there, stroll along the river and admire the views of some of London’s most famous landmarks, such as the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. This may also be a good time to hop on a speedboat for an extra memorable experience on the river. I booked a tour with Thames Rockets that I’ll NEVER forget. (Watch me fight for my life.) Seriously, I can’t wait to book them again for another tour of the Thames.
Afternoon:
After exploring the South Bank, head to nearby Borough Market, one of London’s oldest and most famous food markets. This bustling market is home to over 100 stalls selling everything from artisanal cheese to freshly baked bread to international street food. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy the lively atmosphere before continuing your exploration of the city.
Evening:
End your final day in London with a visit to the iconic Buckingham Palace. This famous royal residence has been the official London residence of the British monarch since 1837 and is one of the city’s top tourist attractions.
