Couture: a word so overused and misappropriated that its meaning is lost among common definition. A truly couture piece is, however, always designed and custom created by hand with a client’s specific taste in mind. In Chicago, the jewel of the conservative Midwest, few designers bother creating couture fashions. But then again, Shernett Swaby is not a designer; she’s an artist.
Back in May of this year, I interviewed Swaby for a segment on ChicagoingsTV called ‘Behind the Design’, a collaboration with ChiTown Fashionista. She took us from her start as an up-and-coming creator, to a stint on Project Runway where she finished among the top 4 contestants, to her move to Chicago and shared her plans for the future. (She’s the one who would rather stay at home than see either Kanye West or the Smashing Pumpkins in concert.) Needless to say, we love her!
In celebration of SWABY’s remodeled and expanded showroom, the artist behind the line is offering shoppers 50% off of prices now through the end of November.* Check out the store’s new, sleek, décor and two new fitting rooms. Any item in the store is fully customizable or available for purchase off the rack. Clients have the option of choosing their favorite fabrics and working alongside Swaby herself in the creation of custom pieces.
The new SWABY 2014 line, which debuted during Chicago Fashion Week, is displayed in gallery form around the store.
The store’s Humboldt Park location means plentiful parking if you want to stop by for a quick looksee. Being the nosey Nancy that I am, I payed her a visit this week to raid the closet and take a gander at the new digs. Being the doll that she is, Shernett allowed me to share these pics with you guys.
*Swaby’s signature line, SWABY, and casual line, S-Basix, are the only two collections not included in the sale.
